This webinar provides an overview (a review for some people) of practical, easy-to-implement guidelines for developing defensible competency-based tests. 

What will I learn?

Participants will learn the following:  what reliability and validity mean as measures of test quality; some of the myths about reliability and validity; strategies for defining  test content that can enhance test quality; selected pitfalls to avoid in item writing and scoring; and administrative issues that can impact test quality.

  • Define the terms “reliability” and “validity” as measures of test quality.
  • Debunk some common myths about reliability and validity.
  • Describe how test content can be defined in a way that links job training to actual practice, and explain how this might enhance test quality.
  • Identify the components of an assessment objective, and explain the importance of each component.
  • Explain how some selected item formats might enhance or erode test quality. 
  • Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of using a team approach to item  & scoring development. 
  • Evaluate the extent to which the material covered might or might not be a good fit for your assessment situation given your risks, goals and resources
